Students must then work with their team members to decide who has the correct definition/answer for each vocabulary term. Teams can be shuffled each game to have students work with many different classmates and the their results are live as each team answers correctly or incorrectly. This game was so popular with my students that they didn't want to leave to go to their next class. They consistently begged to keep playing "one more game"! Hope you and your students enjoy this tool as much as we did!!
It worked fabulously and students really liked that they could start the lesson and move at their own pace. I really liked that I was able to stop the students during the video to check for understanding with multiple choice and open ended questions.

Process for implementation: I pre-recorded the lesson using Screencast-O-Matic and then uploaded the video to YouTube. Next, I used that video within EDPuzzle and created my own questions throughout to make sure students were understanding the concept. To share the EDPuzzle easily with my students I linked it to my class blog/website or had them open it via the EDPuzzle Ipad app and gave them the class code. (Students did need to log in with their school Google account to access the lesson.)

Other ideas: In addition to using EDPuzzle for instruction of a concept/skill, it could also be used in a language classroom for listening activities or assessment.

Afterwards, they listened to the recording and reflected individually on their oral proficiency, using a proficiency rubric that was created by our world language department. (The rubric was developed by using the ACTFL guidelines for oral proficiency.)

The great thing about this activity is that it allowed students to really focus on their speaking abilities and reflect with greater precision. I will be implementing this activity more in the future to allow students to become more comfortable speaking in the target language, to help them improve their oral proficiency, and to become better at self reflecting and self correcting.

How I use it in my Spanish classes: I use Kahoot to practice reading in the target language and learn new vocabulary. I usually write each question/description/definition of a word along with the answers/choices all in Spanish. Each student enters the game individually or in small groups entering a game specific code @ Kahoot.it. It is an engaging activity for students completly done in the target language!

To add some culture: There is an experimental feature in Kahoot that allows you to add a video to automatically play while waiting for students to join the game (See screenshot below!). To take advantage of this 1-2 minutes of downtime on my most recent Kahoot created game, I included a video tour of Barrio Gótico in Barcelona, Spain. It was a great way to expose students to one of the more famous neighborhoods of Spain, since we are currently studying how neighborhoods differ and how where you live affects daily choices/routines, and further maximize learning in the classroom!
Our model classroom professional development day was held at the Innovation Room at NWTC in Green Bay, WI. This room at the tech college was designed to promote collaboration and was outfitted with a variety of technology resources to enhance learning.

Here is an outline of our day...

1. Shared what we are excited about...

2. Reflection of how we have changed as educators in the last 3 years. (Each teacher took a section of the whiteboards and made a list of the different ways. We then walked around and looked at each other's areas of growth.) This was a great reflection activity!

3. Lunch and tour of NWTC campus: Very neat learning spaces, especially in the cafeteria. Projectors and pull down screens all over for groups to learn together and collaborate while in a relaxed atmosphere.

4. Watched short thought provoking videos on education. Discussion/brainstorming followed each one.
Links to videos:
Play, Passion, Pupose : Tony Wagner
How to Answer the Yeah, Buts... - Will Richardson

5. Teach me something I don't know: Sharing of new tools/apps/strategies we're excited about..

6. Exploration of new tool/personalized professional development

My challenge(s) after today.... Need to expand the classroom walls further. Want to create experiences for students with people from other cultures/other Spanish speakers. Need to brainstorm a list of resources.

Ideas:

Classroom Twitter Account? / Linked to class blog

Skype w/1st grade class in district - career/hero/etc. focus....

w/Chromebooks/ speaking videos via webcam>upload to drive>share in class folder

At the bottom of the Doc, I placed a link to a Google Form I created that assessed their reading comprehension. The thing I really liked is that the combination provided a richer reading experience for students and made it more interactive. In addition, with the new Google Forms features, I was able to include a map image that was needed for reference for one of the questions. Students were much more focused on this activity than with traditional reading activities that I have done in the past. Also, many commented on how they liked it much better! Check out the video below to see the activity taking place!
For unit 1 it is "How do people enjoy the outdoors in other parts of the world?". To introduce students to this and have them learn about some of the popular outdoor activities in other countries, I created a customized Google search using various Spanish websites. I then had students search and put together a list as a class of the different countries and popular outdoor activities there. The activity when really well and what I liked is that they were exploring the sites, coming up with their own information, and sharing it with the class versus me just telling them about it. Take a look at the video below to see how it went!
(Who are the heroes of the world?), students in my Spanish III courses were assessed via a presentational performance based assessment.

The task: Create a skit about a problem/issue and a final resolution to the problem involving some type of hero. (Students also needed to properly integrate present subjuntive w/ verbs of doubt and emotion within their diolague.)

To complete their task, students used various tools to continue collaborating outside of the classroom. Tools that were utilized included Google Docs, E-mail, Facebook, and Text Messaging. It was amazing to see all of the creative presentations that the students put together that included not only proper use of the present subjunctive, but also integration of other personal interests as in the example below.
Each small group is in charge of a web page within the site that contains information about their chosen profession. In order to create the pages, students are researching and finding community members that hold those occupations to ask them for recommendations or advice they would give to someone that wants to go into that field. I am impressed with their ideas/work so far and can't wait to see the finished products. Stay tuned for another post with the final products!

I like to make songs up to common tunes for my students to help them learn key concepts in class. Today instead of just writing my lyrics on a slide and having them read/sing the words. I created a music video fairly easily using Youtube. Just a way to make it a little more fun and engaging!
I made a video of myself reading the information to students and highlighting key words. They could see the text, hear it being spoken and pinpoint key information to understand it better. Students loved it and it created a much richer way for them to read in the target language.

Things I love about it:

1. You can customize the background to any image.
2. You can link a YouTube video to play when the timer goes off.
3. I was able to add a picture from Barcelona, Spain during "La Navidad" and a Spanish carol available from YouTube to play when the timer went off. It was a simple way to integrate a bit of culture into the lesson!

One tip - I pinned this Chrome app in my browser to have ready whenever I need to use it!
I posed various questions throughout the video for students to answer and even gave out some prizes for most creative/detailed answers. It was very effective for creating further engagement in the activity and took very little time to create/prepare! Take a look at how it went...
Underneath the information, I added a couple of questions that ask students to verify that they understand the expectations of using Twitter/other social media in my classroom. Students will read the info on the form, answer the questions and submit it to me before we begin our first Twitter discussion tomorrow. Take a look at the form below.
In the past I collected phone numbers, etc. from everyone to do this. However, using Remind 101 has streamlined the process and made it much easier.

After setting up an account in Remind101, I created separate "classes" for each class I taught and for the parents of students in those classes. With each class you get a subscription code that you can give out for people to subscribe to it. Once someone subscribes, Remind101 collects their name/info., which allows me see who subscribes. The teacher can also unsubscribe someone if necessary.

I put my Remind101 subscription codes in my syllabus and will also put them out at parent teacher conferences tonight to advertise this optional form of communication to parents!

This is a screen shot of what will be displayed on the Smartboard in my classroom as parents walk in for conferences! (I have scribbled out the exact codes for privacy reasons.)
To do this, I created a TodaysMeet room for each of my 3 sections of Spanish 3 and then linked the URL of each room to today's post on our class blog. The whole activity worked seamlessly and students really seemed to understand better how to properly use the 2 tenses. Definitely a successful activity, which I plan to use again in the future!
Today's reflection questions:

How might 6 hat thinking (see here for explanation) be used within the classroom or with colleagues?

I think that 6 hat thinking could be a great 'tool' for facilitating a discussion. It recognizes the different hats we all wear at times and takes those into account. The 6 hat thinking could help create better discussion by recognizing what everyone brings to the table and help avoid feelings of exclusion, hurt, jealousy, resentment, etc. However, I do feel that if not facilitated well, it could hinder discussion.

Describe when you have seen elements of the 4 stages of community (see here for explanation) in your community, school or family. What stage is your school community in?

I tend to see the 4 stages of community, (pseudocommunity, chaos, emptiness and community) when "communicating' in life. The communication could be actions, words or both. I feel that I constantly see all 4 stages, depending on the situation, people, etc. In my school I feel that throughout the year we go between all 4 stages depending on the issues that arise or are being discussed, but I do love when that stage of community is achieved!!

This week I have signed up to take part in the Pulaski Red Raider Learning Academy within my school district. This week long academy will have many components including collaboration time, goal-setting, experiences, reflections and more. I have chosen to do my daily reflections via my professional blog to hopefully share / pass on what I learn! Also, if you have any comments on my ideas/thoughts/etc. please share them. I love the feedback!! So here goes...

Day 1 Reflection Questions:

Where are you at as an educator? I feel that as an educator I have come a really long way and have filled my "toolbox" with many useful teaching tools in 10 years, but I still have a really long way to go and will never be able to fill up my toolbox to the point where I won't need more! I love learning, especially about learning and technology! It is fascinating to learn how the brain works and exciting to develop new tools to improve and motivate student learning. Right now I feel that I am and will continue to be a builder of ' learning experiences' who continually needs to keep learning to improve and make those experiences successful!

How have you gotten there? I have arrived at where I am at through the many experiences in my life and what I have learned from other successful educators. I also feel that taking risks in my teaching practice and consciously working to improve have been huge factors in forming the educator I have become.

What were the challenges and successes from the past school year? I did a recent blog post, where I reflected on the past school year and my thoughts can be seen by clicking here.

This school year had both it's challenges and amazing moments! The beginning of the year was a little rocky as we spent time figuring out the devices, glitches, procedures and other surprises that came our way. However, the benefits and high points of implementing a 1:1 Pulaski Community School District 21st Model Classroom most definitely outnumbered the obstacles! I have laid out some of the new 'tools' implemented in my classroom this year, student favorites (based on their informal feedback), and goal/ideas for next year....
I learned a lot and have a bunch more ideas after our tour today of InfoCor in Germantown, WI. They were extremely knowledgeable about the products they had to offer and I learned about some great tools that I didn't realize I already had access too.

One of these tools is the Google 3D Warehouse! What a collection of 3D images readily available for use!

Here are some pics of the products we viewed during our tour!
